Update! AT&T throws DirecTV Now into Unlimited Choice bundle!

AT&T is betting you want some video to go with your unlimited data plan.

The Dallas telecommunications giant said Thursday that its Unlimited Choice data plan is now eligible for a promotion that adds the DirecTV Now streaming service for an extra $10. The promotion was previously only available to Unlimited Plus customers.

Unlimited data is the latest bait offered by the carriers to get you to switch services. But while the rest of the pack has focused on price or features, AT&T has attempted to stand apart by offering more video options, part of its broader transformation into a media company with the acquisition of DirecTV and its pending purchase of Time Warner.

The base $35-a-month “Live a Little” plan offers over 60 channels, including AMC, FX, SyFy, USA, CNN, Fox, ABC, NBC, TNT, and more. That isn’t a bad deal for $10 extra, assuming you’re looking for an over-the-top TV service.

The new $10 deal for Unlimited Choice customers comes in the form of a $25-per-month video credit that starts after three billing cycles. When applied to the base-level $35-a-month DirecTV Now plan, that credit works out to the promised $10-per-month price point. Customers can also apply that credit to a pricier plan or AT&T’s DirecTV or U-verse TV services instead, should they prefer more conventional TV options.

Keep in mind that AT&T’s Unlimited Choice plan has restrictions when it comes to tethering your smartphone or adding additional devices. If you want to do either of those things, you’ll want to consider the Unlimited Plus plan, which costs $90 after automatic payments and paperless billing discounts and offers 10GB of high-speed data per line when tethering from a smartphone. Unlimited Plus users can also choose to use their $25-per-month discount on conventional DirecTV or U-Verse TV subscriptions instead of DirecTV Now.

Unlimited Plus is $90 and comes with free HBO, 10 gigabytes of mobile hotspot data and high-definition video.
